Popovich Extends Contract With San Antonio Spurs For Five More Years

July 09, (THEWILL) – Gregg Popovich, the long-standing coach of the San Antonio Spurs, has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the franchise, as announced by the team on Saturday.
Popovich, who has been at the helm of the Spurs since 1996, holds the distinction of being the winningest coach in NBA history, with an impressive record of 1,366 regular-season victories and 170 playoff wins. The terms of the contract were not disclosed, in line with the team’s policy. Prior to his tenure as head coach, Popovich served as an assistant with the Spurs and the Golden State Warriors.
Under his guidance, the Spurs have achieved great success, including five NBA championships, three NBA Coach of the Year titles, and four appearances as the head coach of the NBA All-Star Game. Popovich also led Team USA to a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The extension of Popovich’s contract follows the recent selection of Victor Wembanyama as the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Wembanyama, a highly regarded 19-year-old French talent, is considered a once-in-a-generation player. Throughout his coaching career, Popovich has had the privilege of working with numerous basketball legends, such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Dominique Wilkins.
The 74-year-old has also guided players like Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, and Kawhi Leonard to NBA championships. With his renewed commitment to the Spurs, Popovich will continue to shape and lead the team towards future success.
